The separation unit in the Gel-Spin DNA Recovery Kit utilizes the combined forces of mechanical pressure and centrifugation to separate DNA or RNA from an agarose gel matrix (either low or high melting point agarose) without the use of chemical or enzymatic reagents to depolymerize the agarose. The unit also includes a cation exchange resin, which provides a trap to remove contaminating proteins. This is especially important in recovering restriction endonuclease generated DNA fragments.
Unlike silica gel or glass bead methods that can cause DNA shearing, the isolation and purification of DNA with this kit does not adversely affect the DNA structure. Each unit can process up to 1ml of gel. Larger samples should be split and processed separately.
