Article: Waste Management In Single-Use Systems – Exploding The Myths
By Pall Life Sciences - BioPharmaceuticals
When questions on the impact of single-use systems on waste management are raised within the pharmaceutical industry, responses can vary widely from "major concern" to "very little impact". In a survey published in 2010,1 a mixed and sometimes conflicting assortment of comments were received zncluding "No environmental impact …"; "Waste generation will be high…"; "The impact of biopharm disposables is insignificant compared to the global contribution…"; "I don't like the idea of single-use components from a sustainability point of view…"; "We are managing in an acceptable manner…"; "This is going to be a serious problem…"; "Our waste is incinerated."; "Need to allow for more co-generation …".
Some of the comments are based on current practice, others are prospective thoughts and some are simply personal opinions. Very few responders reference a calculated, quantified basis for their views. The survey did, however, quantify the response to one question—a high proportion, 60.9%, of respondents felt that decisions on implementing or expanding single-use disposables were not affected by waste disposal and it would not reduce their usage. The picture is therefore quite confusing, perhaps not surprisingly, because waste management is a very complex subject covering issues such as solid and liquid waste, gas emissions, energy consumption, product life cycles, carbon footprint, global warming, regulations and sustainability, etc.
