Thermo Fisher Scientific Launches Serum-Free Medium For Adherent CHO Cells

Logan, UT - Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, has introduced a new serum-free medium for adherent CHO cells, Thermo Scientific HyClone SFM4CHO-A™. This versatile new medium supports the growth of multiple CHO cell clones as well as the production of a variety of recombinant proteins in adherent cell culture.

Traditionally, the adherent culture of CHO cells required serum-containing medium; however, regulatory concerns surrounding the use of animal-derived components in the production of therapeutic proteins is driving improvements in culturing parameters for adherent CHO cell lines.

"Until now, standard CHO serum-free media have failed to achieve the same performance as media containing serum," said Brandon Pence, bioproduction market manager for Thermo Fisher Scientific. "But our HyClone SFM4CHO-A formulation equals the robustness of serum-based media in adherence, spreading and growth using standard tissue-culture surfaces — without the concerns associated with animal-derived products."

SFM4CHO-A is part of the Thermo Scientific HyClone portfolio of serum-free media and process supplements for research and biopharmaceutical applications, which also includes hybridomas and myelomas, CHO, HEK 293, PER.C6, Crucell and insect and kidney epithelial cells such as Vero and MDCK.
