The theme of unknown impurity identification is ubiquitous in the pharmaceutical industry. The issue of rapid identification of these impurities and degradation products is particularly important for products that pre-date many of the new, now standard analytical technologies that are currently available to pharmaceutical scientists. These newer methods may have been unknown when the product was first introduced to the market, or simply not sensitive enough to accurately detect the presence of an impurity. The task of rapidly identifying impurities in order to accurately assess any toxicological consequences is of paramount importance topharmaceutical scientists. However, identifying trace levels of unknown compounds is usually a time consuming task where months, rather then weeks, of work is often required before an unambiguous identification is made.
