By Douglas E. May
The biopharmaceutical industry is complex and highly regulated, and its business processes are supported by and produce vast amounts of structured (data) and unstructured (content) information. Traditionally, unstructured information has been thought to manifest primarily as single documents. But it actually exists in many forms: from standard operating procedures (SOPs), research reports, and clinical protocols to the entire biologics license application (BLA) itself. Other important content includes advertising copy, sales aids, presentation slides, batch records, training materials, and manufacturing diagrams. Studies have shown that unstructured content account for as much as 80% of a company's business information.
